Iyengar Yoga is a holistic experience that benefits the body, mind and emotions. While the practice is intense, poses
are adapted with the use of props, so that everyone can manage to their capabilities. Even for students in a class of varying levels, the same pose can be done in a way that everyone can experience it to some degree, and everyone can be challenged.
Asanas or yogic poses are often held for longer in Iyengar Yoga than many other forms of yoga. This allows the student to learn the posture with conscious awareness to correct alignment and to be able to go dee
per into the pose. When doing postures fast the outer layers of the body are worked. When holding asanas for longer, it is not just the outer body that is reached but the inner body as well, especially where it concerns improving the health of the inner organs. Addressing the nervous system is also given importance in Iyengar yoga.
One of the many benefits of being so conscious of doing the pose correctly is that it keeps the mind engaged in the present moment, by anchoring it to the body and breath. So, while there is intense focus during a class, it is all about the here and now. This creates a kind of meditation in action and the mind is refreshed by having a break from constantly moving into the past and future.
Physically there is a balance in creating both strength and flexibility, and through improved alignment there is an increased flow of energy. Many of the asanas are physically and mentally challenging and yet you are still learning to relax at the same time. This means that yoga is not about finding calm and balance in a perfectly calm and balanced situation but instead teaches the student to stay centered and calm in challenging situations. In time the aim is to take what you have learnt on your mat and apply that emotional balance into the rest of your life.
